Cleveland State University clock receives needed facelift
By Eric Bonzar
On May 30, workers from Boyer Signs and Graphics Inc. of Cleveland added a face to the clock overlooking main plaza.
The two-man crew gave the time piece a new look by adding the Cleveland State University logo. The next day, Marty Wallace and Jim Burger from Suburban Clock and Repair—located in Berea—added a new internal mechanism, along with new hands and cardinal markers.
Brian Pasela, manager at Suburban Clock and Repair said that the old mechanism pales in comparison to the new one. “It (The old mechanism) looked like a toy compared to the new one,” Pasela said.
The new mechanism is at least four times larger than the original and its new innards weigh in at 200 pounds—much heavier than its 40 pound predecessor.
The added weight and enormous size of the mechanism will now enable the clock to stand the test of time against Mother Nature.
Back in Fall 2011 The Cleveland Stater reported on the malfunctioning clock. Tania Anochin, project manager in the university architect’s office, who was working on fixing the problem, explained the small gears in the clock were damaged by high winds, and the clock hands were too heavy to accurately keep time.
The damaged gears were unable to move the hands, not allowing the clock to properly function she added.
Anochin also said how far off the clock was depended on which direction the wind is blowing—making the non-functional and aesthetically unpleasing clock’s repair a priority.
“An institution of higher learning should have a clock that works,” said Stephanie Y. McHenry, vice president for business affairs and finance. “It’s a face of the university.”
The hour, minute and cardinal markers received an overhaul as well.
Burger said the new time piece will illuminate much brighter than the old one because the clock will now be powered by light emitting diodes (LED) instead of neon.
According to Burger, the old face was originally installed in 1995, and says the new one should, “definitely last longer than the original.”
